I can’t stop crying, and it feels awfully selfish. David, I wish I could do some crying for you and give you a rest. Poor little girls.
Thank you for sharing all you do with us. It means so much.
I see courage mixed with a bit of mischief. I told her Friday and Saturday how beautiful she is and this picture is a wonderful reminder of the amazing courage she showed all of us. I miss her so much already. Love to you all.
Just got back in town and heard the sad news. I am so sorry David. Laura was one of the best people I have ever met – kind, intelligent, an amazing and unique sense of humor, so creative. What an understatement, she was so much more than my writing abilities allow me to convey. My heart is just broken. Carlos also sends his love and is so saddened about La Mariposa (“Butterfly”, Carlos’ pet name for her).
Lots of love to you, the girls and Laura’s family.
David, You have so many friends that share your grief, yet we have only the smallest idea of how great your loss is.
This particular song you chose is unique to your relationship with Laura, of course, but strangely it is one she introduced to me by including on a compilation tape that she gave me years ago. She was always to willing to share her creativity and love of life and the arts and personal expression, whether it be sharing music, developing her own skills in photography, or experimenting with fashion.
Laura, with you, Lily and Naomi are in my thoughts and prayers.
Mostly honesty– “I don’t want this, and I don’t want you to go through this, but it is what it is. This will be difficult, but take solace that we were fortunate to be able to face this together, and that I love you.”
I’ve always ever seen love there. She always bore patience, amusement, and a fierce familial unity in her eyes.

David: I haven’t been keeping up but now that she is at rest, know that you will never forget her, nor the girls. You will make sure of that. Your life wasnt’ perfect but full of such love and sympathy. I believe that it was fate that you married Laura and had more love in the years that you were together than in some people’s entire lives. My Laura has told me how wonderful she was, and your farm looks like Paradise. I can imagine you entertaining all of yours and Laura’s friends over the years to come, and I know that you will always keep her spirit alive for the girls. They couldn’t ask much more than that except for your ongoing love which I know you will never lose. Your writing about your pain is the best thing you can do. Just remember how Laura would want you to be with the girls and yourself. Hope to get to see you and your girls one of these days. Your love will radiate out and bring in people that need you.
I see Laura! Also I see determination and a bit of weariness. It’s easy to see why she fought the fight and why you did all you could to keep her around.
Love,
Aunt Cathy
While we only came to know Laura through David’s writing, her eyes say “I see something you don’t see, I know something you don’t know, and I am watching. Don’t think I’m not!” I am also reminded, through the mystery of a smile that plays Mona Lisa-esque on the edge, of something I heard about a close friend who had passed on: “There was always a touch of pixie in the boy.”
Thinking of you.

I actually remember that look… I always felt that Laura had an old soul & was able to see past facades. When I encountered that look, she was saying to me “You silly, silly girl… you’re definitely silly & crazy but I’ll still claim you as my friend.” She loved me, warts & all 🙂
I’ve looked at this photo for several days and tried to imagine what the look in her eyes could mean…honestly, I see sadness, loss of everything she loves..this look is one that was so different from every time I was around her. The look haunts me somewhat because it reminds us all of the uncertainty of life and how we would feel in this circumstance. I respect the courage she showed and feel for her fear that she didn’t fight it harder. No one knows unless they’ve been there. Hope you are getting some rest and quiet time for grief. Love to all Janice
I resisted responding to this a couple weeks ago – more like put it off. Her look tells me so much: how wise she was, how much she had endured, how grateful she was for friends, family, David & Lily & Naomi especially.
And what a blessing we all had to share in her life and to share our lives with her.
This site is dedicated to the memory of Laura and is now mostly an archive of her 15-month struggle with cancer as told by her husband David and other family. A brief background of her case is found in the About section. Family photos dating back five years can be found in the main photos section. There are two slideshow retrospectives of Laura throughout her life. A collaborative tribute effort is woefully incomplete and I encourage your help.

We never met Laura, but feel we came to know her through your website.
I see peace in her eyes, warmth, and love.
Peace be with all of you.

I also see an old soul, looking with courage and authenticity at her journey on this earth and the one that she was about to begin.
