This is from A Room With A View. It was one of our favorite films to watch and laugh together. Laura or I would often shout, “Mr Beebe! Matches!” during moments of humor and urgency in our lives — a line from the film with little consequence that struck us funny because almost every line seems to drip with character. In the scene pictured here, the young man — raised unconventionally by his eccentric father — is shown leaning out of a tree shouting to nobody in particular “Truth! Beauty! Love!”.

I stayed at a little palazzo hotel in Florence once that showed movies each night in the common room for guests. They probably showed “A Room With A View” every few days, because I can’t believe we were just lucky that they showed it while we were there. We were on a beautiful piazza – can’t remember which – and there was actually a scene in the movie filmed there, so that when it came on you could literally turn around in your seat and see the same set out the window that was on the TV.
David, thank you again for sharing all these, and for including your comments on this one. Humor and urgency. Truth. Beauty. Love.
